Actress Emma Stone is the latest star to be named to the cast of the upcoming Spiderman film.

Stone, who is perhaps most well known for her role in 2007’s Superbad, has been cast to play the part of Peter Parker’s love interest Gwen Stacy, in the most recent adaptation of the popular comic book series.

The part of Gwen Stacy was played by Bryce Dallas Howard in the 2007 sequel Spiderman 3, however it appears that the latest film in the franchise will start completely afresh, with Stone taking up the torch.

Matt Tolmach, President of Columbia Pictures said: “She is extraordinarily talented and has a very special on-screen spark that is perfect for this role. Given her history with the studio, casting her in one of our most important franchises is a real thrill.”

Stone will star alongside Andrew Garfield, who will be playing the web-slinging superhero, as Sony Pictures and director Marc Webb attempt to emulate the recent success of Batman by breathing new life into the Marvel classic.

Webb said: “At the heart of the story of Peter Parker is not only the amazing Spider-Man, but also an ordinary teenager who is wondering what he has to do to get the girl. Andrew and Emma will bring everything audiences expect to these roles, but also make them their own.”

Emma Stone can be seen in the upcoming high-school comedy Easy A, which is due for UK release on 22 October.
