Sienna Miller as the Baroness in G.I. Joe

Opting for roles in films like Layer Cake, Factory Girl and The Interview in the past, it seems inconceivable that Sienna Miller’s latest role is that of a villainous lead in a mainstream Hollywood action movie but this is exactly where she finds herself. Miller talks to Pure Movies about this change, moving to America and G.I.  Joe.

This is a very different role for you, quite the action girl.  Could you talk us through how you enjoyed or maybe didn’t enjoy that?

Sienna Miller: I loved it; it was such a relief to do something that was pure entertainment and fun and I had to get fit for the first time.  That was entertaining. We did six weeks of fight training, I can do mixed martial arts and I can fire weapons now. I’m actually a good little scrapper.  It’s very difficult to recreate an iconic character such as the Baroness but it was very fun.

Now that you’ve made your first big Hollywood blockbuster are you considering a more permanent move to America?

SM: I’m staying at home, I can’t leave London.  It’s great because I get to travel with work but London will always be my home.

Is it important to continue making smaller British films?

SM: Of course I love British cinema and I’ve made some really cool British films that I’m very proud of.  It’s great to hop between this kind of genre and more art-house stuff that I’ve done before.

You’re brunette, in this film.  Which is more fun, blonde or brunette?

SM: As a brunette I got some large weapons in GI Joe so brunette in this film.

Was there a stunt that you found particularly difficult when training?

SM: Initially firing guns for me was quite a big deal.  I found that quite intimidating not coming from a gun culture I couldn’t do it without squinting. Also, there was the time that Channing Tatum dropped me…I wasn’t going to bring that up, he’s a real American hero. He threw me down a sloping corridor, you have to watch that on the extras!
