Crowning glory for The King’s Speech

There were few surprises at this years Academy Awards as The King’s Speech took the top awards on the night.

Despite being nominated for 12 awards, Tom Hooper’s moving story of King George VI’s struggle with a speech impediment only won four, although arguably the most important ones.

Along with the awards for Best Film and Original screenplay, Colin Firth took the Best Actor gong to add to a Golden Globe and a Bafta, with Tom Hooper taking the award for Best Director.

Natalie Portman was given the award for Best Actress for her stunning performance in Darren Aronofsky’s Black Swan.

The Social Network had been hotly tipped to win the best director award for David Fincher, but had to make do with the awards for adapted screenplay, original score and film editing.

David O Russell’s The Fighter took both supporting role awards for Christian Bale and Melissa Leo.

Christopher Nolan’s Inception also brought home 4 awards, for cinematography, sound editing, sound mixing and visual effects, however many were still confused by Nolan’s omission from the nominees for Best Director.
